quiet so far on 101 and 280 through san francisco. much more "timesaver traffic" coming up. >> thank you, liz. good morning, everybody. it's thursday, november 15. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. two fires in just a matter of hours in the north bay, both suspicious. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in vallejo now with the investigation this morning. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is just beginning here at the village bar. this is on tuolumne street in vallejo. you can see inside of the bar not a whole lot of damage to the building. several items are singed. there is some water damage. this is where the investigation is focused this morning. this was though the second fire within about a six-hour period overnight within two blocks. i want to show you some pictures of this fire. a little earlier this broke out at 2:45 at the village bar. and police have called this fire suspicious. they don't know the cause yet.

well, two blocks away, there was a house fire at 8:00 last night. that was on alabama street. now, no one was home at the time. so nobody was injured. and firefighters were able to get that out once neighbors alerted them to that fire. but that fire is also suspicious. firefighters don't know the cause of either of these fires. but again, investigations are under way right now at both of those scenes. live in vallejo, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. smoke forced several san francisco residents out of their home early this morning. firefighters say a wall heater may have sparked the fire at this noe street complex just before 2:00. nobody injured, most of the damage was caused by smoke and water. new this morning a suspected drunk driver behind bars this morning after a wild overnight chase. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco's mission district to explain what the driver did that caught the officers' attention. >> reporter: actually it was a -- what the driver did is she

went on an on-ramp that was closed and the chp officer that was standing by tried to pull her over and this is actually where it all ended. we are at 17th and south van ness where now crews are trying to clean up the damage of where this whole thickenedded. the driver ended up crashing into a pole knocking over this traffic cabinet and subsequently knocking out all the lights or traffic lights in the area. first video from earlier you can see the damage the driver caused. chp says it started when the suspect tried to go on that closed freeway on-ramp. they tried to pull her over at ninth street but she kept going exiting off mission and van ness and that's when the chase began and things got worse. that driver hit a parked car, that car hit a cyclist and then the driver hit another parked car and a pole and knocking over the lights in the area. but back out live, crews have been efforting trying to put or basically rewire, recircuit

these lights so they can get it going. flares notify drivers traffic lights are still out. the pedestrian is expected to be okay. he sustained minor injuries because it was the car that rolled on him not the woman hitting him directly. the driver will face charges including dui. it will be her fourth in the past 10 years including trying to avoid police, as well. so an investigation is ongoing into each individual traffic collision, as well. live in san francisco's mission district, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. something went terribly wrong when a group took its nightly walk in the east bay hills. a hiker plunged to his death on the uc-berkeley campus. the man's body was found below grizzly peak boulevard. friends called 911 about 6:30 last night after the 20-year- old disappeared during their walk. university police found his

body about 200 feet down the steep ravine. foul play is not suspected but the death is still under investigation. a registered sex offender was caught volunteering at a san jose catholic school. according to the "mercury news," the person was volunteering as a deejay at the saint francis cabrini catholic elementary school and parish festival but was not arrested after he showed authorities a letter signed by someone at the school saying he was allowed to be there. california allows for this, the law does, anyway. they said they didn't know about his sex offender status. authorities are trying to figure out where the letter came from. security officers -- [ please stand by, technical difficulties ]

they're doing what they cano protect th in the area hit by the big mud slide in daly city on tuesday. they are doing what they can now to protect the neighborhood around hillside park. that includes stacking these bales of hay and clearing out storm drains. the hay will prevent more damage after the big mud slide. >> we are going to take our remote control tv camera to go into the pipe itself and then get to the storm drain. then we candy vet water to the location. >> officials don't expect any more problems from the 8" pipe that broke but it's likely to take weeks to finally get it

repaired. let's check in with the rain man because we are going to get wet here for the next week. >> yeah. going to get wet. i don't think we'll see flooding rains for those folks in daly city but i wouldn't park on that street again for a while. yeah, looks like a dry day today but this is it. we are going to head back into very wet pattern now in the bay area. outside right now, it is a quiet start to the morning some temperatures dropping off, 37 degrees in santa rosa, 38 in fairfield, 41 in livermore and 43 degrees in san jose. as we look toward the afternoon, some changing weather. it will be some mild temperatures but look at these spiraling clouds off the coastline. that is that area of low pressure slowly working its way in our direction increasing clouds throughout the day today. and then it looks like overnight tonight, into tomorrow, rain becoming more likely. so more clouds out there not as warm as we head toward the afternoon today but not bad. still pushing 70 degrees in some of the warmest spots. but this is it, folks. the last dry day. we have some wet weather even a stronger storm over the weekend. we'll have more on that in a moment. right now let's check the roads

she went to him when she started getting e-mails from paula broadwell. three people are reportedly dead after a rocket attack on southern israel from the gaza strip. the attack comes after israel l a military operation this week on gaza which is governed by the palestinian militant group hamas. it began after previously rocket attacks on israel. palestinian officials say president mahmoud abbas has cut short a trip to europe to deal with the crisis. two women home alone in marin county managed to fight off an armed prowler. officers say the suspect may have stab wounds in his chest. according to police, he broke into a san rafael apartment tuesday night. the women say he was armed with a knife. he got into a fight with one of them the other roommate grabbed a phone and called police. other neighbors say they heard yelling. >> kind of scary when you have young people in the house with you, too. >> the victim who was being

a northern california highwy yesterday. the pilot lost - flight, so he a plane was forced to land on a northern california highway yesterday. the pilot apparently lost engine power midflight. he landed in the only spot he could find the median on highway 65 near roosevelt. >> this is something you train for and practice for. you know, you find yourself when it actually happens all that training comes back. >> well, it worked. how did they get the plane off the highway? the pilot fixed the problem. the plane had the perfect take- off right there. a few obstacles. went back to its airport and is doing just fine. >> why not? the highway seems like a

logical runway. >> unless you're a car right behind it. let's go out live. we have nothing like planes on the road. pretty quiet. we don't have any major incidents. we just checked in with chp. so far problem-free a lot of the overnight roadwork has also been picked up. we'll show you where traffic is getting heavy. we are seeing extra volume right now across westbound 580 drive time about 20 to 25 minutes right now between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. westbound highway 4 we're still seeing these really slow speeds sensors through antioch especially around a street, lone tree way. danville a live look at southbound 680. pretty quiet right now through the san ramon valley continuing down towards the south bay. we have another camera actually 880/237 in milpitas and coming around the bend, you can see no brake lights yet. typically around 6:45 since we

start to see some delays. elsewhere across the golden gate bridge, southbound 101, as you can see, they have all their southbound commute direction lanes open. everything good to go to doyle drive and san francisco and no big delays so far for mass transit. everything is on time. that is your "timesaver traffic." lawrence is gearing up for big changes in the forecast. >> yeah. i like to see the rain make its way back to the bay area. it's been very nice the last few days, but changes are coming our way as high pressure finally is giving way to some storm clouds off the coastline. right now it's a quiet start to the day mostly clear skies inside the bay and along the coastline but starting to see some patchy fog in the north bay valleys. this afternoon, more clouds will start to roll in. the temperatures a little bit cooler but still mild and then rain likely to make a return tonight and into tomorrow. so with that in mind, here you go. high pressure bringing you one last day of sunshine. you can already see a lot of clouds moving through southern california. but then this low is going to start to approach the coastline so the clouds are going to be on the increase throughout the day today. should stay dry but tonight we are going to see the rain developing and that's going to

open the door for a series of storms to roll through the bay area right through the weekend. let's see if we can time it out. starting out mostly clear this morning, then through the day clouds streaming in. staying dry into the evening hours. the commute going home looks okay then late tonight early tomorrow morning we see a few showers developing out there and i think rain becoming more likely as we head throughout the day tomorrow. so it looks like things are going to be unsettled and possibly wet as we head into the next 48 hours. maybe an inch of rain in the santa cruz mountains. half inch of rain in san francisco. and almost three-quarters there into santa rosa. so look toward the afternoon, enjoy the dry day. sunshine and high clouds drifting in temperatures into the 60s. the next couple of days though we change gears back into that wet weather pattern. showers into saturday a stronger storm saturday night into sunday. showers and unsettled weather as we head in toward next week. that's a look at weather. getting good here! [ music ] >> reporter: the marching band is hard at work practicing for their next gig. >> we rehearse a lot, and these students are very, very dedicated to the program and more importantly they are dedicated to each other. >> reporter: and their dedication has paid off. they were selected to perform in the tournament of roses parade in pasadena. the parade, watched by 40 million people worldwide, is competitive. hundreds of bands applied and only 22 were chosen including valley christian. >> definitely probably one of the biggest accomplishments that a high school band can

get. >> reporter: and they are sharing the accomplishment of another band beijing 57 all the way in china. in april valley christian traveled to beijing. now through technology the two bands practice their songs together bridging the cultural gap with music. >> whatever you can't say with words, you can let out with music. >> reporter: and in january, the two bands will join marching six miles through pasadena playing out their high school dream. >> most people are like band nerds. they have that negative connotation. but i think we're probably the coolest people around. the band is super cool. >> reporter: and so is their school. >> did you play in the band. i did not but i have a big appreciation. a lot of, in the band. what's so neat is the cultural

>> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 6:31 now. we begin with two suspicious fires in the north bay in just a matter of hours. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in vallejo, where one fire did some major damage. anne. >> reporter: and as firefighters are still trying to figure out exactly how it started here at the village bar and they are about to run this danger tape around this scene to make sure nobody contaminates their investigation. you can see inside the bar right now, it's pretty dark. not a whole lot of damage to the building itself. but a lot of items are singed. firefighters were able to put the fire out soon after it started. it started around 2:45 this morning. here are some pictures from around that time. they don't know the cause. part of the reason it's suspicious is because two blocks away from this bar, a house caught fire on alabama street at 8:00 last night. that was about a six-hour time difference. so we have two suspicious fires

within two blocks of each other here in vallejo. firefighters on scene of both of these fires trying to figure out who may have started them and why. live in vallejo, anne makovec, cbs 5. residents are back home after a fire ripped through their san francisco structure. fire crews blame a wall heater for this morning's fire on noe street. the fire caused smoke and water damage. new this morning a driver with a history dui arrested after a wild chase through the city. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran here in san francisco where a bicyclist was hurt during the pursuit. she joins us with more. >> reporter: this all started because that driver tried to get on an on-ramp that was closed and that's how it began but take a look at how it ended. very destructive. we are at the ending point where that driver sideswiped the truck. follow me and i'll show you where it actually ended. she ended up hitting this light pole right here. now causing a traffic mess because she knocked out the

traffic lights in this area. but let's take a look at video from the scene earlier. again, i mentioned, that drunk driver tried to get on that closed freeway on-ramp. the officer on duty saw this tried to pull her over at ninth street but she kept going, exiting off mission and van ness and again that's when the chase began and things got worse. she hit a parked car, that parked caroled on a cyclist. then she kept going again, continued to hit that other parked car we showed you earlier just blocks away before hitting that light pole and knocking out the traffic light in the area. back out live, crews are still working on the wires and circuits trying to get those traffic lights up here at the intersection of 17th and south van ness. they have put up flares to notify drivers to be careful in fact area. and to give you an out date on cyclist, we are told that -- an update on the cyclist, we are told he is expected to be okay. he was taken to san francisco general hospital. she didn't hit cyclist, she hit a car that hit the cyclist.

so he sustained minor injuries. as for that woman, she has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. this is her fourth dui in the past 10 10 years. she is facing serious charges. cate caugiran, cbs 5. a man's body was found on the uc-berkeley campus. the body of a 20-year-old was located last night 200 feet down a steep ravine. the man disappeared, he was walking with friends last night. they noticed he was gone and then called 911. foul play not suspected in the case. but the death is still under investigation. a registered sex owe fender was not arrested after he was found volunteering at a san jose catholic school because this man mark gurries showed authorities a letter signed by someone at the school saying he was allowed to be on campus there. california law allows for this but school administrators don't know about his sex offender status or that letter. authorities are now trying to

figure out where that letter came from. new numbers on how bad the police officer shortage is getting in san jose. facing lower wages and benefits, more officers in san jose are resigning. there are now less than 1,000 officers in the department available for full duty. and just 583 officers are patrolling the streets in a city of nearly one million people. >> there is no wiggle room. anytime you move personnel in the san jose police department, you're robbing peter to pay paul. >> mayor chuck reed says 44 men and women are going through the academy now. those officers should be ready to head the streets next june. 6:35. out the door with a little weather and traffic and weather. are you ready for rain? >> a little bit i guess. i have five umbrellas. >> it's been so nice the last couple days. it will be okay but things throughout the day changing as we get more clouds in the sky. what a nice sunrise outside right now. just a few clouds in the

distance. sun coming up at 6:50 this morning and looks like we're in for another decent day but things changing throughout the day today as we'll see more clouds throwing into our skies. temperatures a little chilly in spots. some fog in santa rosa, 39 degrees. 40 in concord. and it is 53 degrees right now in san francisco. high clouds likely to move in from this low just off the coastline. high pressure giving way now, so by the afternoon, a lot of clouds moving in and the temperatures will start to come down. still comfortable near 70 degrees in morgan hill. 68 in san jose. about 63 in antioch and 69 degrees in pleasanton. as you head inside the bay you will find temperatures in the mid-60s into san francisco. and about 67 degrees in alameda. rain is coming our way, though, elizabeth. it's going to be busy, busy, busy for you. >> a very wet friday morning commute. for right now we're dry but things are definitely starting to heat up across the bay area. it's now past 6:30 when we start to see delays at the bay bridge. they turned the metering lights on so now we have backups in the cash and the fastrak lanes. so it's a little too late to beat the early-morning rush.

but right now everything is good just your typical commute backing up toward the 880 overcrossing. westbound 580 some brake lights approaching the dublin interchange. and this is the drive time. slow and go right now from tracy to 680. it's about a half hour from the altamont pass towards dublin- pleasanton. also slow highway 4 usually slow this time of the morning and actually we're seeing brake lights through the pittsburg- bay point area now. silicon valley commute we just started to see a few slowdowns there leaving milpitas heading towards san jose. at 880 and 237. that's "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. the founder of the antivirus company who is hiding from police in belize is getting help. john mcafee is a person of interest in the homicide investigation of one of his neighbors that country. he has been on the run since the weekend. he told the associated press he is innocent and he has a young woman now helping him stay one step ahead of the police who he says want to kill him.

army intelligence officer with high clearance. cbs news has learned the identity of the fbi agent who first brought the case to the bureau frederick humphries, a friend of florida socialite jill kelley. she went to him when she started getting harassing e- mails from broadwell. and this just in. defense secretary leon panetta is ordering a review of ethics training for military officers. it is 6:39 now. there is word that oil giant bp has agreed to pay billions in criminal penalties for the 2010 oil spill in the gulf of mexico. an anonymous source told the "associated press" two bp employees will face manslaughter charges. 11 people were killed in the explosion and the resulting oil leak causing long-term environmental damage to the gulf. a source said bp has agreed to plead guilty to on instruction for lying to congress about how much oil was pouring out of the ruptured well. superstorm sandy helped drive the number of people seeking unemployment benefits by 78,000 last week.

it's the highest level now in some 18 months. today the president is going to new york's staten island to see some of the devastation from sandy. the president toured new jersey shortly after sandy hit but the mayor michael bloomberg asked the president to stay away from new york at the time saying that the president's visit would have taken up too many resources. the dungeness crab season opens today but bring your checkbook. >> a modest catch may have dine, paying more. the commercial fishing boats headed out yesterday. their fresh catch should hit markets by this afternoon. the fishermen will get $3 per pound. you can expect to pay twice that. bay area restaurants say it's worth it. >> i think it's going to be very full, so when you crack the crab, the meat will be very police departmentful inside. the taste of course of local traffic -- the meat will be

for a while. okay, you this, lawrence. outside now it's been a quiet commute. so the first half of the commute is doing well. let's see, a live look at the nimitz. 880 through oakland, i saw a minor fender bender southbound 880 approaching west grand. it doesn't appear to be causing much of a delay. near the coliseum everything is at top speeds. westbound 237 usually around the time we see a few brake lights leaving milpitas. drive time in the yellow towards san jose in the westbound lanes. otherwise across the bay bridge we have delays over at the toll plaza. the metering lights were turned on before 6:30. this is what it looks like up the incline so tight squeeze there heading towards treasure island and the tunnel and behind the pay gates stacked up to the foot of the maze and growing. to the south bay you can see live drive time sensors slowing up the guadalupe parkway and 101 coming into san jose. these are your drive times.
